“The past is past. The present is about to pass. We need not regurgitate or relive them,” were Prof Thandwa Mthembu’s words, in addressing the decolonisation of education at public universities. “Now, we need to focus on laying the foundation today for our collective future. Decolonisation should, therefore, be futuristic and not a hankering after the past.”
During his inauguration as the Durban University of Technology’s new Vice-Chancellor and Principal on 18 March, 2017, Prof Mthembu had a lot to say that transcends his institution and is applicable across the sector.
