Prof AC Bawa chats about his childhood, his varsity life and why SA universities need to reimagine themselves
On 13 June 2018, the Chief Executive Officer of Universities SA (USAf), Prof Ahmed Bawa, was the subject of freelance writer Nicholas Claude’s weekly podcast, Voices from SA.
Prof Bawa talks of his upbringing in Sevenoaks outside Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal, and the shock he felt when he joined the cricket club at the University of the Witwatersrand only to find he was not allowed to play in the league because he was classified Indian. He sees a need for universities to go through a process of introspection and re-imagination, and calls for the national planning commission to strike up a new relationship between universities and business, communities, students and alumni.
