On 22 March, 2018, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with Universities SA, released a letter to the City Press in response to a City Press online article of 11 March 2018, in which Professor Herbert Maserumule of the Tshwane University of Technology was accusing South Africa’s academics and researchers for going desperate lengths to publish work that does not meet academic standards.

In their response, ASSAf and USAf sought to counter Professor Maserumule’s opinion, which the two organisations brand as being “sensationalistic” and making “sweeping and generalised accusations.”
